Sandstone
Working with South Africa’s premier heritage collection

Sandstone is a large agricultural estate of over 18,000 acres in the Eastern Free State province of South Africa, offering scenic wide-open spaces, huge heritage collections, loads of old fashioned rides and a 26km-long narrow gauge railway.

From a small start over 20 years ago, Sandstone is now one of the world’s largest private heritage resources with a railway, agricultural equipment, vintage transport and a unique military collection, much of it maintained in working order.

With such a diverse and historic collection located in outstanding scenic surroundings, it was inevitable that there would be interest from the public to visit. Events were organised that made this possible and these grew into the bi-annual Stars of Sandstone International Festival.

In 2019, Sandstone contracted Geoff’s Trains to act as their international tourist booking agent for the Stars of Sandstone Festival. The liaison was a success, but it has been decided to move away from the Stars Festival and explore a new direction that will give heritage and railway enthusiasts an opportunity to benefit from more focused but equally rewarding visits. Geoff’s Trains has been asked to spearhead this new initiative and we are delighted to accept the challenge.

Group Visits

Sandstone consider that any group of four or more guests should be offered the benefit of a group tour. The maximum size of a group is determined by the accommodation available within a 1 hour drive from the estate. Geoff can assist with bringing together hundreds of hotel and lodge beds best suited to your needs.

You may be a family group planning to visit South Africa, a club or interest group, an incentive group operator, a tour operator specialising in heritage or railway touring or a general tour operator looking for something a little more unusual to add to your South African product. Sandstone can offer you something special and Geoff can make it happen, he can prepare proposals that include any of the heritage assets present at Sandstone, including the narrow gauge railway.  When your ideal visit has been planned, Geoff will transfer your booking to Sandstone Estates and your contract will be with them.

Send Geoff a request or query by email, he will get back to you and together you can work on a visit best tailored to your interests and budget. Your query will be treated with the strictest confidence and you information will only be shared with Sandstone.
